Event Venue:  Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, India

The Third Asian Lepidoptera Conservation Symposium and Training programme is jointly organized by IUCN SSC South Asian Invertebrate Specialist Group (SAsISG), Bharathiar University (BU), Zoo Outreach Organisation (ZOO) and Wildlife Information Liaison Development (WILD) in collaboration with Invertebrate conservation groups, research organisations, universities and institutes as well as non-government organisations that work on conservation biology across Asia. ALCS3 will be held from 25 to 29 October 2010 at Bharathiar University campus, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, southern India.

The theme of ALCS3 is
"Local community conservation meeting Asian Lepidoptera conservation needs"

The key areas of ALCS3 are to:
•        investigate the use of iconic / endemic flagship Lepidoptera species to promote habitat conservation through community involvement;
•        assess priority areas / communities for Lepidoptera conservation initiatives at the local level that has global conservation impact;
•        provide tools for species status assessment;
•        train participants in moth and butterfly identification skills and
•        explore aspects of moth and butterfly conservation ecology and management and needs

Target Groups
The symposium is open to anyone interested in moth and butterfly conservation, policy, social, ecological and livelihood related aspects.

Students, researchers and academics, policy makers, government officials, non-government and community based organizations and volunteers will find the symposium an ideal opportunity to enhance their understanding of the subject, meet with their counterparts and experts from Asia and rest of the world and share their expertise and experiences with others.

ALCS#3 update

10 weeks to go.  There are around 35 places still available for this event.
Key speakers are:

  • Prof. Tim New, a world authority on Lepidoptera conservation with several books and numerous scientific papers on the subject;
  • Dr. Paul Waring, author of the best pocket field guide to larger moths of Britain and Ireland and co-ordinator of the British survey on threatened moths;
  • Prof. Li Hou Hun, author of the Gelechiidae of China and describer of over 200 species of micro moth, one of the most highly regarded Chinese lepidopterists;
  • Isaac Kehimkar, author of several books on the butterflies of India.

there will be three or four sessions of presented papers, and at least three workshop sessions on identification skills, recording methods and curation for Lepidoptera. There is also a two day, one night post-symposium tour to Indira Ghandi National Park in the Western Ghats (not included in the registration price).  On-line registration is available until 30th September, although (based upon the current take up) it is likely all the places will have been taken by then.

cheers,

Roger.
