This is Creatonotos transiens

Arctiidae, Arctiinae

A common and widespread species in Hong Kong. No specific habitat association.

This species has some pretty sophisticated acoustic capabilities, including jamming or aposematic acoustics to warn bats of a distasteful meal.

Wrong colours! (this is greyish-white and yellow, not red and cream!).

This wee beastie has been assigned the scientific name Creatonotos transiens

Arctiidae, Arctiinae.

David,

Tussocks, Tigers, Nolids: all are noctuids.

In essence this is still a classification in flux. What is apparent is that there are two major components to Noctuidae - the Noctuidae sensu stricto (trifine Noctuidae) and the L.A.Q. clade (Lymantriid, Arctiid, quadrifine Noctuidae).

This is a female.

I don't know that the sub-species is really valid, as this wide ranging species seems pretty constant in morphology across its whole distribution (India through Australia).

I suppose it is one of the most common moth larvae in HK!!

All of the below records are from Southern District of HK Island:

At Februray 23, a female was found laying eggs

It seems to have habit of laying hundreds of eggs on concrete walls

On Februray 27, first instar larvae were found

Later, on April 8, many larvae were found.
The youger one:

The last instar:

I think its eating preference was the most diverse amongst the moth. It was found consume most Gramineae plant including roadside weed & Bamboo species. It also fed on Oxalis spp. And it was commonly found feeding on withered flower of various plants and also the plant tissue in birds' dropping!!!

On April 16, one of the last instar was pupated.

On April 23, freshly adult moth was emerged from the pupa. I think it should be a female.

btw, obviously, the pale moth at the top is the female; the dark moth just above this post is the male. Many Arctiidae moths of both genders of this group have thread-like antennae.
