ID Please

Find dozen of these tiny diving beetle in a tiny still water pond after rains. There size is about 5mm. Quick swimmers and love to hide under crack or rotten things. They need to swim to surface occasionally.

Agree with sykin that this is likely Copelatus oblitus or related species.   My earlier suspect as "Platynectes dissimilis" was incorrect.

Thank you nadia. It looks quite different from the image in the Photographic Guide.

Are these nymphs? or different gender?

I think it is just the dirt in the water masking up the markings on the elytra.

Perhaps not. The images were actually taken from 3-4 different individuals and none of them have the stripes appeared on elytra.  Also the water is still and pretty clear and I'm certain there wasn't any mud on their backs. The elytra was brown, plain and glossy like those tiny coaches!!

plain brown glossy elytra is also my impression on this common water bug seen in hk for over 30 yrs

That reminded me about my dad and grandpa used to catch larger Dytiscidae with a bowl of  water under street lamps near the train terminus of Hunghom a few decade ago. He cooked them with minced pork or pan fried them. I still saw people eating these bugs in China but that was a much larger species (25-30mm).  The one in my observation is really small (5mm only).

5mm dytiscid caught in Hunghom? That's new to me (for the size). And they're so small so eaten whole when fried?

I am always seeing the ~20mm or bigger one. Remember some hawkers sold those salt fried dytiscids as "和味龍".

Nope. The 5mm bug was found at Kowloon Bay.

They are Copelatus sp. cf oblitus
