Moth Larva ID Index

ZYGAENOIDEA

Limacodidae 刺蛾科

Small, slug like caterpillars, frequently with stinging spines which can give quite painful stings.  These toxic spines are also frequently used in the pupa, so care must be taken
in handling either one.

Zygaenidae
斑蛾科 (Burnet Moths)

Mostly day flying, very beautiful moths which, in Hong Kong, also have glands allowing them to exude a cyanide substance, making them taste bad to predators.

BOMBYCOIDEA

Sphingidae 天蛾科 (Hawkmoths)

Also sometimes called "humming-bird moths" due to their similar way of flying and hovering.
The larvae usually have a quite long tail "spike" which seems to be for decoration only, since it is harmless.  The bodies are basically hairless and have no poison at all.

Bombycidae  蠶蛾總科 (Silkmoths)
The examples shown below are actually quite small  (1-4 cm),especially when you think about the silk moth  caterpillars associated with making silk. And, even though these three do have "tails", they are not  Sphinx moths!

Eupterotidae 帶蛾科 (Monkey Moths)

Saturnidae
大蠶蛾科  (Emperor Moths)
Fairly stout/robust bodies, with pronounced setae and/or tubercules; mature larvae are fairly large;
Hong Kong species are non-poisonous, though some are certainly prickly.

early instar                                   mature instar

LASIOCAMPOIDEA

Lasiocampidae  枯葉蛾科
Bodies are long compared to width, completely covered with two layers of setae.  The inner layer of hairs are stiff and contain a toxin that produces intense itching (for about 2 weeks!) and/or pain for most people.  The larvae typically have two, forward-pointing clumps of head setae (like horns); the 3rd segment has a dorsal spike and two lateral spikes.  The final body segment frequently has a tail spike.  Some species lack the spikes, but have distinctive, dual neck ruffs.  Mature larvae are frequently 5-10 cm long.

GEOMETROIDEA

Uraniidae 燕蛾科
     Uraniinae
     Epipleminae

Geometridae 尺蛾科
     Desmobathrinae
     Ennominae
          Macariini
     Geometrinae
     Larentiinae     Sterrhinae
Geometrid caterpillars are widely different in shape, size, posture, coloring, etc.  But, one thing they all share is that, while they all have 3 pairs of true legs, which later become the legs and feet of the adult moth, they all have only one pair of pro-legs, which occur just in  front of their "claspers".  These caterpillars have very few hairs and are not at all poisonous.  "Geo-metrid" literally means "Earth-Measurer".  They are also known as Inch_Worrns.

NOCTUOIDEA

Notodontidae 舟蛾科 (Prominent Moths)      NotodontinaeProminent moths have some of the oddest body shapes.  Most of theories in Hong Kong are of two basic types.  The first kind of fairly long, split, whip-like tails which can be bent, twisted, curled and also extrude two "scent" (?) horns.  The second kind lack the twin tails, but have a "tail bump" instead.  Perhaps the oddest form is that of the"Lobster moth" which has long, ant-like true legs which they can fold up and sit as with "folded hands" as though in prayer.

      Phalerinae

Erebidae
Erebidae larva are typically fairly small, generally 2-4 cm long, frequently of a yellow, orange or brown color.

      Lymantriinae  毒蛾科 (Tussock Moths)
          Lymantriini
Lymantridae larva are typically fairly small, generally 2-4 cm long, frequently of a yellow, orange or brown color.  Many species have four dorsal "tufts" of setae which causes them to be called "tussock moths".  These larvae typically have a tail spike as well as setae "horns" on either side of their heads, like a Lasiocampid larva, but without the "furry" appearance of a Lasiocampid.  Other forms only have a dorsal clump of setae on two (2) of the segments behind the head, but have only very short "horns" and no tail spike.  Some of the tussock moth species are among the most polyphagous moth larvae.  Also, these larvae produce some very peculiar looking pupae--even green ones!  The setae of many Lymantridae larvae contain a mild urticarious (itching) toxin, but they affect only a few people.

          Orgyiini

         Arctornithini
Included here are four larvae that have been reared through to the moth.  All four are distinctive, given the sameness of the imago's appearance.  They also mimic other Lepidoptera larvae.   I include the images here to show how different some Lymantridae larvae can be.

           Nygmiini

      Arctiinae 燈蛾科 (Tiger Moths)            Lithosiini
            Syntomini
            Arctiini

Noctuidae (sensu lato) 夜蛾科

      Catocalinae

Nolidae
瘤蛾科      Nolinae
Nolid larvae are small, only about 2 cm long in their mature form.  The larvae are quite odd, some having long, feather like setae.  Others have enlarged heads.  Some, just rather ordinary as to form, but are brightly coloured.
