Biodiversity of Hong Kong Insects (19.XII.2017 Update)

The insect classification basically follows that proposed by the Royal Entomological Society (see the link below) with slight modification on the grouping of orders.  Order Mastophasmatodea is yet to be reported from China but is included here for the sake of completion.

The link does not seem to work.

The numbers seem to the amount of effort spent on searching and classifying different groups of insects.
The varying ratios between the number of species found in HK to that in GD is interesting.
Numbers like these show how much is yet to be discovered.

9. Dermaptera = 305 (C), 32 (HK), 19 (GD)

My guess is that the true ratio is close to that of Ordonata (143:193).

Taiwan has been doing extremely well in biodiversity research.   The number of new species and new records found have almost doubled in the past decade!  The mainland counterparts are also doing pretty well.   Hong Kong has been slowed down quite a bit since reunification.   It's a pity that none of the local universities offer entomology course.

Hiking is becoming a more and more fashionable activity in Hong Kong in recent years, but more effort has to be put in to give this trend a little further push and train more naturalists who are willing to spend time on wildlife. To me, opening a entomology course might be necessary, but to get people out into nature at a young age is equally important. If a large part of the younger generation screams when they encounter any insect, it is not easy to find enough people to pursue the interest or even the career of entomology (or in fact any other sort of wildlife).
